Handwork, natural dyes and delicate weaves last for years when they are treated gently. Here is exactly how to care for each fabric we use.

General rules - Always read the care tag stitched inside the garment first. - Wash dark and bright colours separately for the first three washes. - Turn embroidered and sequinned pieces inside out before washing. - Never soak an embellished piece for more than a few minutes. - Dry in shade. Direct sunlight fades natural dyes quickly.

Silk, katan and half-silk - Dry clean only. Home washing dulls the sheen and can shrink the weave. - Iron on low heat with a cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric. - Store folded in a cotton or muslin bag, never in a plastic cover. - Refold every few months so the same crease does not weaken.

Cotton, handloom and khadi - Hand wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent, or machine wash on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag. - Expect slight shrinkage and softening in the first wash. This is normal for handloom. - Do not use bleach or harsh stain removers. - Iron while slightly damp for the crispest finish.

Muslin and jamdani - Hand wash separately in cold water, or dry clean for heavily worked pieces. - Never wring or twist. Press the water out between two towels. - Dry flat in shade and iron on low heat from the reverse side.

Net, georgette and chiffon - Dry clean recommended, especially with stonework or sequins. - If hand washing, use cold water, no rubbing, and no brush. - Hang on a padded hanger to avoid shoulder marks.

Embroidery, zari, stonework and sequins - Never machine wash. Spot clean gently with a damp cloth. - Iron only on the reverse, avoiding the worked area completely. - Perfume and hairspray tarnish zari — apply them before dressing.

Storage between seasons - Clean the garment before storing; stains set permanently over time. - Use neem leaves or silica sachets instead of strong naphthalene. - Keep heavy bridal pieces flat in a box rather than hanging, so the weight does not stretch the fabric.

Stains, quickly - Oil: dust with talcum powder, leave 30 minutes, brush away, then dry clean. - Tea or juice: blot with cold water immediately, never hot. - Ink or makeup: do not rub. Take it to a dry cleaner and mention the stain type.
